BAGPIPES BY IAN MURRAY OF FORFAR, ANGUS, SCOTLAND

For over twenty years Ian Murray of Forfar, Angus, Scotland, has been making pipes; in 1999 he opened his own shop, making pipes in the tradition of Duncan MacDougal of Aberfeldy and William Thow of Dundee. His bagpipes are produced from African Blackwood specially imported from Tanzania, combined with projection mounts and ferrules made from various materials including wood, imitation ivory, horn, nickel, brass, and sterling silver. There are a few occasions when real ivory (under licence) can be used when available.

Ian Murray's pipes are notable for their attention to detail - bold, deep comb and beading; mirror-like bores; and beautiful tone. The overall look of these pipes is of a beautifully restored set from the 1890s; deep, lovely wood, elegant profile, fine fitting. The silver slides on the set shown center below have exquisite hand engraving, done locally in Scotland and Edinburgh hallmarked. Murray bagpipes are truly exquisite in both their workmanship and tone, with a full, sweet drone sound very like old MacDougalls.
