NOTES FROM PIPEY'S CORNER

September 2012

AND WE'RE OFF?

So Pleasanton came and went, and for the first time in twenty-five years - I STAYED HOME! DID NOTHING but relax and enjoy cool weather on Labor day weekend for the first time in years...AND STILL, after all the announcements I made on FB and here - people called and emailed me asking 'Where are you? I can't find your booth...." And now I am off on The Great Trek East which has been planned, but postponed, for the last two-and-a-half years. So the shop is closed until September 30, and I will be reporting on things as they happen on Farcebook....LATER!

UPDATE SEPT. 23: Sooooo...The Great Trek East was curtailed due to a severe flareup of my mother's back problems; instead of taking the Acela from Stamford to DC on the 18th we flew to LA and limo'd back to Santa Babawawa, where I remain until we can get this sorted. I will still be home on the 30th, but may have to return when she has her FIFTH surgery in three years....oy. Growing old is not for the squeamish, as they say.

I did manage to get up to Tunxis, it amazed me how much the place has changed. Many of the old cabins, including the one I lived in, have been replaced with modern winterised structures, and some are lived-in year round. Most of the fishing is gone; the Old Trout Pond is drained, the dam gave way years ago. The Little Trout Pond, where I fell in and almost drowned in 1958, is all overgrown; the stream is no longer stocked with fish, and the spillway from the lake is blocked off. Fishing in the lake hasn't been very good for years, so it's effectively dead. Birds are hunted just about any time, except for migratory and native game birds, which have closed seasons, and 'deer week' is still in effect, but the place is now a country club...without a golf course....

So here's a pic I took from Phebe Wallace's dock on the 13th:

AND I NEED TO FIND ANOTHER KNITTER...AGAIN!

Once again I find myself without the services of a reliable knitter. WTF? Why is it that I can't get someone to make kilt hose reliably???? It's not like it's really hard to do for someone experienced....HELP!

ROSETTES AND GAELIC KNOTS ARE BACK IN STOCK...ONLY TOOK A YEAR AND A HALF!

JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED IT LAST MONTH:

For some years I've been using a special HEMP TREATMENT I made up from wax and oil, specifically beeswax and bore doctor, and found it to be beneficial to my old MacDougall pipe. So I made up a bunch of it and am now offering it to you, in 1/2 or 1 ounce soft cakes. This stuff really works well, especially on the REAL HEMP we have in stock. 1/2 ounce cake is $6.00, 1 ounce is $12. Just rub it on your well-laid hemp and your tuning pins won't stick. This stuff repels water and feeds the wood as well, and helps prevent checking in your stocks and tuning chambers.
