BAGPIPES BY KINTAIL OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND
Greig Sharp founded Sharp & Co. in 1971 after a long career at Peter Henderson, where he was the last manager before its merge into R.G. Hardie in that year. Since their inception, Sharp & Co. have manufactured KINTAIL bagpipes, a pipe of superior tone and steadiness, based on the pattern originally made by Peter Henderson in 1888. The firm is now incorporated under the J&R Glen name, and still producing a fine hand-made bagpipe.
In addition, Kintail are the licensed manufacturers of DAVID GLEN and J&R GLEN bagpipes, reproducing the bagpipes famous around the world for their exquisite tone, beautiful Victorian design, and superior balance for band or solo performer. Today's Glen pipes continue a tradition that dates to the late eighteenth century, when Donald MacDonald established his shop in Edinburgh.
In 1971 Sharp & Co. introduced the 'Chalice Pattern' bagpipe, interpreting early bagpipe design from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries while incorporating modern boring and reeding. Perhaps the fullest drone made, the Chalice Pattern KINTAIL bagpipe is a fine band instrument and perfect for pipers in re-enactment societies.
In 1981 nephews Drew and Stephen Sharp entered into the business with their DRUMRAN pipes, at which point KINTAIL became 'Sharp & Co. (Bagpipe Makers) Ltd,' now J&R Glen Ltd. All Kintail bagpipes are made to rigid standards of excellence in regard to quality of African Blackwood, accuracy and fineness of boring, and exterior finish. They are carefully inspected at every stage of manufacture and tested before shipping.
